DISCOVERY OF MAGNESIUM

  • Discovered by Joseph Black in 1775
  • Sir Humphrey Davy was credited with first isolating it in 1808
  • Antoine Bussy in 1828, finally obtained the metal
  • First discovered outside of the Greek city of Magnesia
  • For many years it was thought to be the same element as calcium

MAGNESIUM THE ELEMENT

  • Atomic #: 12
  • Atomic Mass: 24.305
  • Element Symbol: Mg

WHAT MAGNESIUM CONSISTS OF

  • Solid
  • Metal
  • Family name or Rare Earth series: Alkaline Earth Metal

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Melting point- 650°C or 1202°F
  • Boiling point- 1090°C or 1994°F
  • Heat of fusion- 8.48KJ/mol
  • Heat of vaporization
  • Density- 1.74g/cm3

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • Magnesium takes the place of hydrogen in boiling water
  • Reacts at a slow pace with cold water
  • Burns at a rapid pace with hot water
  • Actively reacts with some non-metals:
  • Slowly gets tarnished in most air due to the formation of a thin film of the oxide

USES OF MAGNESIUM

  • Fireworks, chocolate, dairy products, whole grains,
  • green leafy products, photogenic flashbulbs,
  • added to rocket & missile fuels, used in some handled electrons
  • and produced in stars larger than 3 solar masses
  • Helps regulate blood pressure and keeps blood sugar levels normal

UNUSUAL FACTS AND USES

  • Obtained from Sea Water
  • Found in 60 different minerals in the Earths crust
  • Athletes use it to improve their endurance and tolerance levels
  • Use to shorten the length of Migraines and Headaches
  • Used to make proteins, strong bones, & to regulate the bodies temperature
