BROWN BEAR (URSUS ARCTOS)

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Size: 5 - 8 ft in length
  • Weight: 440 - 800 lbs
  • Color: Although generally dark brown, their color varies from where they live

Range: Brown bears can be found in the far north eastern part of the U.S.

DIET

  • Brown bears are omnivores, but their diet changes depending what season it is. Some examples are apples, berries, fish, roots, insects, reptiles, and mammals.

LIFE SPAN

  • In the wild, brown bears can live up to 20 - 30 years

REPRODUCTION

  • Mating season: May to July
  • Gestation: 180 - 266 days
  • They give birth to 2 - 3 cubs

BEHAVIOUR

  • They use many ways to communicate such as clawing at trees, body language, making noises, and using their scent

  • They can run as fast as horses (40 mph)
  • Nearly 50% of brown bears cubs die before they are 1 year old
