Published on Nov 20, 2015

Here are several tips to take your social media skills from a white belt to master level.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Bruce Lee's 7 tips

for Improving Your Social Media Skills

1. First Admit you know nothing

“Those who are unaware they are walking in darkness will never seek the light.”
Tip 1: “Those who are unaware they are walking in darkness will never seek the light.”
After fighting several people in America, Bruce Lee knew that the styles of Kungfu that he learned in Hong Kong were limited and that he need to learn more to improve his fighting ability. In order to improve your social media ability, you must first understand that what you know is limited. I assume since you are reading this article, you are part of the few who recognize your limitation. Kudos! You are on a great start.

2. know your online community needs

“Real living is living for others.”
Bruce Lee was dedicated to his friends and family. He continuously sought to make his life and the lives of his friends and family better. As a martial arts instructor, Bruce sought to improve his students by first understanding what they were capable of. To do this, he first had to watch and observe his students' fighting ability before knowing how best to help them.

Before you can engage your online communities, you must first listen and understand the needs their needs. Listen, understand how they “move”, what they think and what they need. By doing this, you will find where you can add value and grow your community.

3. learn about social media strategies

“Learning is never cumulative, it is a movement of knowing which has no end and no beginning.”
ever changing social media landscape, it is important for you to do same and keep abreast on current social media trends. There are many social media books available. Here are a few of the good ones:

1. Content Rules: Ann Handley & C.C. Chapman

2. Groundswell: Charlene Li & Josh Bernoff

3. Smart Business, Social Business: Michael Brito

4. Apply the strategies you have learned

”Knowing is not enough, we must apply.”
Bruce Lee not only read martial arts books, but also sought out practitioners of various styles of martial arts. While books were helpful, he needed to practice to better understand these styles. You will need to do the same. While there are many books written about social media, they are of no help until you are able to apply what you have learned. The more you apply what you have learned the better you will understand what you read (and vice versa).

5. use only a few social media tools

“The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.”
Bruce Lee was driven to make his punches and kick as efficient and direct as possible, a concept called Economy of Motion. The more efficient his movements, the quicker and more powerful his strikes. While there are many social media platforms that exist, the key is finding the few that are most suitable to your needs. In doing so, you will not have to worry about becoming overwhelmed by too many platforms and focus on the few that help you connect best to your community.

6. add new content regularly

“A fight is not won by one punch or one kick…”
Bruce Lee was the epitome of a fit athlete. He believed that in a real fight, you need to be able to last as long as it takes and not rely on a single strike to defeat your opponent. In social media, it is often said that “Content is King”, so publish new content regularly at least 2 to 5 times per week. In doing so, you will be on your way to building your online presence.

7. develop your unique online presence

“Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own.”
Of all of Bruce Lee philosophies, I believe this would be the main advice that he would share. Bruce believed that we should not be limited by tradition, but continue to evolve and progress. While studying the techniques of many martial arts systems, Bruce would discard any of the techniques that he felt was ineffective and absorb the ones that best suited his needs. You will need to do the same. There are many social media books and platforms at your disposal. However, the landscape is continuously changing and not everything from a book published now will be useful for your needs today. So, drop the things that are useless and follow the information that is most relevant.
