PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BRYCE CANYON

NATIONAL PARK

LOCATION

SOUTHWESTERN UTAH,

AREA

IT IS 56 SQUARE MILES

HOODOOS

ROCK TYPES: SLITSTONE, MUDSTONE, BUT MOSTLY LINESTONE

FORMATION

MAINLY FORMED BY FROST WEDGING AND ACID PRECIPITATION

FROST WEDGING

Utah has over 200 freeze/thaw cycles per year. When the water freezes it expands by 10% and creates cracks in the rock that can be exposed to acid precipitation.

ACID PRECIPITATION

OR CARBONIC ACID

The limestone layers in the rock are dissolved by the carbonic acid in the rain. They fall and are weathered grain by grain. The texture of the hoodoos comes from the layers of mudstone and siltstone that are more resistant to carbonic acid.
