4 NOBLE TRUTHS

  • 1. Life is filled with suffering
  • 2. The cause of suffering is desire
  • 3. To cease suffering, one must cease desiring
  • 4. The path to the end of suffering is the noble eight fold path

LIFE IS FILLED WITH SUFFERING

  • All life is impermanent
  • Anatma: "no soul"

THE CAUSE OF SUFFERING IS DESIRE

  • People constantly want something
  • Believing the self to be real is the fundamental
  • Cause of suffering

TO CEASE SUFFERING ONE MUST CEASE DESIRING

  • Everything is suffering, impermanent, and incomplete
  • The only thing permanent and real is the end of suffering
  • Nirvana is the extinction of suffering

NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH

  • Right understanding: one sees things as they really are
  • Right thought: replacing wrong thoughts with right thoughts
  • Right speech: speak truthfully and kindly about others
  • Right conduct: no cheating, stealing, ect.
  • Right livelihood: to not earn a living through harming living things

NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH

  • Right effort: get rid of delusional thoughts, cultivate wholesome thougths
  • Right mindfulness: knowing ones self being aware of thoughts and actions
  • Right concentration: enables a person to see things as they really are
  • --> enlightenment
  • Morality, meditation, and wisdom

  • Sangha
  • Buddha
  • Dharma
