  • Originated In Northern India 
  • In the 5th century BCE
  • Buddha means "awakened and "the enlightened one"
  • Currently has 3 branches, the Theravada (doctrine of the elders)
  • The Mayhana, and Vajrayana

  • Reincarnation
  • The concept that people are reborn after dying.
  • The Four Noble Truths
  • Dukkha, Samudaya, Nirodha, Magga

The Five Percepts of Buddhism

  • Do not kill
  • Do not steal
  • Do not lie
  • Do not misuse sex
  • Do not consume alcohol or other drugs.

Spread of Buddhism

  • Buddhist schools were established in SE Asia
  • Most buddhists are in East Asia
  • Ex: China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Myammar, 
  • Sri Lanka, South Korea, Taiwan, Cambodia, and India
