FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN "REGULARS" SOLDIERS 1866-1944(51)

WHO WERE THEY

Buffalo Soldiers proudly served in the American Military.
Through an act of Congress 6 army units were made up of African-Americans; 9th and 10th cavalry, and 38th-41st infantry regiments, which were later reorganized into the 24th & 25th infantry.

The Buffalo Soldiers were "regulars" Black Soldiers who first saw action in the Civil War. More than 180k fought in the Civil War. 20% of USA cavalry comprised of Black soldiers. Got their name from the Native Americans, who thought their hair resembled buffalo hair.

In addition to the many wars they served in, the Buffalo Soldiers protected Settlers as they moved west, even though they faced racist remarks from the settlers. They served as the first national park rangers and defended our southern border during theMexican Revolution during WWI?

Struggles
Faced racism throughout their existence.
We're given the worst assignments from the Army.
Protected Texas (confederate) during the Native American Wars.
Earned $13.00 a month ($194.03) more than they could earn elsewhere.

Fought with honor in every military campaign until President Truman officially integrated the military in 1948.
23 soldiers earned the Medal of Honor.

Indian wars
Engaged in most of the battles, earning a distinguished record. 19 Buffalo Soldiers earned the Medal of Honor 6 of which were officers. In addition to battles fought, the built roads, military forts, and provided escorts for the U.S. Mail.

Medal of Honor recipient, Henry Johnson, left fortified shelter Fought his way to and from creek to bring water back to wounded while under heavy fire from close range.

Battle of San Juan Hill

The 9th and 10th Cavalry and 24th infantryFought with the Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, to take SanJuan Hill and Kettle Hill from the Spanish blockade, securing the naval port.

The 9th and 10th cavalries went after Francisco "Pancho" Villa, under the orders of General "Black Jack" Pershing.

WWI
The Buffalo Soldiers did not fight over seas, however, experienced soldiers joined other segregated Black units for combat.
The 10th Cavalry supported the 35th Infantry in the Battle of Ambos Nogales, defeating German officers fighting alongside the Mexicans, in the only documented battle on North American Soil during WWI.

WWII
Cavalry disbanded
The 92nd infantry "Buffalo Division" served in combat in the Italian campaign.
93rd served in the Pacific, along with Independent Tank, and Tank destroyer Battalions.
