FORMED OF SEPTEMBER 21, 1866 AT FORT LEAVENWORTH KANSAS

why they are who they are

  • Many reasons why they were called the Buffalo Solider
  • Their curly hair resembled that of a buffalo
  • Their brave nature resembled that of a buffalo
  • They wore buffalo hide coats in the winter

  • 9th Cavalry Regiment

  • Built roads and escorted the U.S. Mail
  • They served as park rangers from 1899 to around 1904
  • Removed the Boomers from Indian Territory

IMPORTANCE

They were the first all black peacetime regiment
