Bugs are interesting creatures. Most bugs are insects, but some are arachnids. Insects are bugs with six legs. Arachnids have eight. Insects and arachnids live all around the world! Just look outside. Bugs are everywhere.
Spiders are arachnids. Most spiders make webs to catch prey. Some spiders are big enough to catch birds! They may sound scary but some are harmless. Most are poisonous like Black Widows! Spiders lay eggs in an egg sack so multiple babies are born at the same time.
Scorpions are arachnids that have pincers and a stinger. Like spiders they are predatory and eat other bugs. Some scorpions eat spiders and other scorpions! Some baby scorpions eat their weaker siblings if they are hungry. Very few baby scorpions make it to their adult stages. Scorpions do not make webs like spiders do because they do not have spinnerets in their abdomens.
Grasshoppers are insects that jump! They jump to escape predators. Their legs are bent like an arrow (>) to put power into the legs. They push up and away they go! Grasshoppers can come in all colours and sizes.
Flies are pesky insects. They like to eat food and they can sometimes carry diseases! The most common flies are called house flies and they get their name from their habit of staying indoors.
Butterflies are insects that like flowers. They are called pollinators. They pollinate flowers which means they help the flowers grow. They drink nectar from the flowers and pollen gets stuck to their body. When they go to other flowers the pollen falls off them into the flowers and the pollen helps the flowers grow.
Bees are pollinators like butterflies. They drink nectar and carry pollen to other flowers. Bees make honey. They feed the honey to the babies. The queen bee is the one who finds the hive and lays the eggs. Her children are worker or soldier bees. The worker bees work at the hive and get nectar and the soldier bees attack attackers. Bees have stingers for protection.
Mosquitoes are insects that drink blood. They also drink fruit juice. They drink fruit juice to help them fly and they drink blood to have babies. Like flies mosquitoes can carry diseases around with them. A mosquito bite is very itchy but it will bleed if scratched. A mosquito’s abdomen will turn bright red if it has recently drank blood.
