BULIMIA NERVOSA

WHAT IT IS

  • Binging on food and then throwing it up
  • Binging on food and then abusing laxatives
  • A mental disorder
  • A cry for help

SYMPTOMS

  • Weight fluctuates constantly
  • Low self esteem due to poor body image/ weight
  • Rapid yellowing of teeth (due to stomach acid)
  • Disappearance of food around the house
  • Going straight to the bathroom after every meal

CAUSES

  • Low self esteem (may be due to extreme cases of bullying)
  • Poor body image (due to societally accepted beauty standards)
  • Traumatic event (sexual, physical, or verbal abuse)
  • Major life changes( puberty, going off to college, getting a divorce)
  • Feeling unloved and unwanted

TREATMENT STEPS

  • If you or someone you know is bulimic, seek help immediately.
  • See a doctor right away. He will perscribe one of two types of treatments
  • Inpatient treatment- staying at a hospital until well again.
  • Outpatient treatment- therapy where you can go home afterwards.

INPATIENT TREATMENT

  • There are several thing that a rehabilitation center can do for you.
  • They offer therapy
  • They offer round the clock help when you feel like purging
  • And most importantly, they have caring staff to help you along the way.

OUTPATIENT TREATMENT

  • Therapy sessions with a professional
  • Your therapist may perscribe you mecidine
  • They can give you helpful advice on how to stop
