Addressing Parental Concerns

1. Discussion

  • Speak to parents about ongoing bullying prevention initiatives board wide, school protocols and classroom policies
  • Discuss intervention strategies with parents so they are aware of how the school puts this into action
  • Ask parents to closely monitor electronic devices and internet use at home

  • Listen to parent concerns and discuss ways to engage child's understanding of bullying both at school and at home
  • Work as a team to create a bullying awareness strategy for child so that it can be enforced at home and at school
  • Communicate any concerns or issues from the school day using a journal or log

2. Intervention

  • Should a problem come to the attention of the teacher at school, immediately contact parent and try to discuss as a large group
  • Create a visual or hands on learning tool for students to be aware of bullying as both a bully and a victim - share this with parents
  • Discuss with students the importance of speaking up if you see bullying in the school - share this discussion with parents and offer resources for support

  • Create a buddy system and have student partner up with someone in the class that they feel comfortable opening up to while on the school bus, in the cafeteria or in the gym - share this buddy system with the parent

3. Observe and Document

  • Discuss what bullying is in the classroom as an ongoing practice - let parents know that this will be an ongoing intiative
  • Should any behaviours or concerns arise, address it immediately with school support staff and parents
  • Observe and document on an ongoing basis to ensure that students are being monitored in and around the classroom; speak to colleagues in integrated classroom to ensure they are aware of parental concerns.
