by: jacob rundell

remains of the city pompeii were discovered in the 16 and 17th century but people did not take it seriously. It was actually the discovery of herculaneum- a town that was also destroyed by mount vesuvius eruption, this is what kicked off multiple excavations in 1738.

A few years after that pompeii was discovered again and excavations of the area began. pompeii was easier to excavate than herculaneum, pompeii was also a popular tourist spot to visit. italy most acclaimed archeologist, giuseppe fiorelli, he made a lot of significant discoveries in the 19th century.

The beginning of the end for pompeii hit in 79 A.D., a series of major earthquakes shook pompeii until mount vesuvius erupted and buried pompeii. the people that survived the eruption died quickly after from inhaling so much ash. Historians predict that up to 75% of Pompeii citizens died in the eruption.

my reaction of this event was shocking to know that a city was buried in ash and volcanic acid, then to find out that the city is still there and preserved.
