Emmett Chappelle

  • Born in Phoenix,Arizona Oct.24,1925
  • 1977 worked with the Goddard Space Flight Center
  • American biochemist Emmett W. Chappelle (l.), who used fluorescence in the detection of bacteria.

Important facts

of Emmett Chappelle

His field of work was in Biochemist

Impotant discoveries

  • Pioneered the development of ingredents needed for all celluar matriels.
  • Advanced the development of LIF
  • working on istanatly finding bacteria in water
  • improved diagnoses of urinary tract infections
  • Used fluorescence in the detection of bacteria.

he mainly worked for NASA

Leading up to his discovery was the light of the lighting bug and how their florescent lights showed and kept away bacteria.

His work is important because it helps detect bacteria faster and quicker and keep people healthy and well

Other discovers resulted from his work

  • His research with Grace Picciolo led to his invention of a method for the detection of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) .
  • Chappelle has been involved in the use of laser-induced fluorescence as a method for determining the health of forest vegetation.

Thank you Mr. Chappelle for helping us use light to find the bacteria that can't been seen with the just the naked eye.
