Byzantium and Russian Timeline
Justinian's Code
• The Justinian Code was created in 528-533.
• Even though Justinian died, his code of legal laws lasted for 900 years.
• The code consisted of 4 works, The Code, The Digest, The Institutes, and The Novellae.
Hagia Sophia
• Hagia Sophia means "Holy Wisdom" in Greek.
• The Hagia Sophia was built by Justinian and it became one of the most inspiring and delighted sights.
• To continue 400 years after Justinian's death, the Hagia Sophia, helped Russian Nobles adopt to Byzantine Christianity.
The Mysterious Disease
• After Justinian's death, a disease arrived to Constantinople coming from ships from India.
• The horrifying illness came and went every 8 to 12 years when finally it faded away in the year 700.
• In the year 542, roughly 10,000 people were dying every day.
Theodora's Death
• Theodora was the wife of Justinian when he was in reign. She died in 548.
• Her death was so important because Justinian became very depressed from it.
• He didn't pass any major laws for the rest of his time at the throne. What this means is that Theodora had a major political influence on the Byzantine empire.
Justinian's Death
• Justinian was the ruler of the Byzantine empire from 527 to 565 when he passed away.
• After Justinian died, the empire completely crashed
• When Justinian died, street fights broke out, and foreign dangers. Once the empire finally settled conflicts, new ones began.
Vikings
• The Viking chief Rurik founded Novgorod in 862. It was Russia's first important city.
• The Vikings could sail by river and sea to Constantinople and trade.
• The things they had to trade included timber, fur, wax, honey, and their Slavic subjects that they sold as slaves.
Princess Olga
• Princess Olga was a member of the Kievan nobility.
• She publically converted to Christianity after visiting Constantinople.
• She governed Kiev from 945 to 964, until her son was old enough to rule.
Yaroslav the Wise
• He started governing Kiev in 1019, but he died while ruling in 1054.
• He led Kiev to even greater glory.
• Skillfully married of his daughters and sister to the Kings and princes of Western Europe.
Mongols Raid Russia
• The Mongols take over and stretch from the Yellow Sea to the Baltic Sea and from the Himalayas to northern Russia.
• In 1240, the Mongols demolished Kiev.
• The Mongols only demanded two things: absolute obedience and massive amounts of payments. Other than this, Russians could follow all their usual customs.
Ivan III's Reign
• While Ivan III was ruler, the Russian state became a genuine empire.
• He claimed to make Russia the "Third Rome."
• He refused to pay tribute to the Mongols in 1480.
