Cable And Streaming

Sajan Nauriyal

The current role of streaming cable/ television service in the distribution and access of media content is to make media content readily available at all points in time. Some of the most prevalent channels streamed via television services are news/informative channels; the display of an effort to make information something accessible to any person with a television at any point in time. The television has become a cultural phenomenon. Almost any household in the United States, rich or poor, will have access to some form of television. This allows data to be streamed on a far more widespread basis than ever before. Not all people in the world, however, can afford to purchase/maintain a television. Thus the “media gap” spoken about in Media and Culture presents itself: information is available via television/streaming to all people who can afford the service. In this way, information has become a privilege.

Television has recently taken the back seat in the initiative to make data accessible to all as a result of the implementation of smartphones, computers, and personalized streaming services. Businesses like Hulu and Netflix provide the same services as cable, and most news channels and entertainment programs now have online libraries. To take it a step further, smartphones have allowed information to be accessible at all hours, even when out of the house, and streaming services like Hulu allow consumers to choose what they want to watch without having to adhere to a broadcast schedule. All things considered, this recent turn to the Internet seems to be a continuation of the process that brought television about in the first place: easy access to information. Although cable streaming hasn’t preserved it’s novelty among the public, it appears to be the largest medium of reaching as many people as possible. For this reason, massive events like the SuperBowl or the Grammy’s are broadcasted on television.
