Theme
The theme of this story is that everyone is equal no matter how similar or different you are from others.

To us being equal is not about everyone looking the same or the same amount of intelligence. It's about everyone that everyone can be equal even if your not the exact same as anyone else.

In the story everyone had to be equal and if they were "better" that another person then they had to wear a handicap. We believe that the real meaning to be equal is being yourself and treating yourself with respect.

Being equal definitely doesn't mean that you have to look the same. Everyone is different in their own way and we can all still be equal.

Putting handicaps on people that are better that the others isn't making everyone equal because to be equal you don't have to be exactly the same as everyone else.

If they are making people wear these handicaps to make them the same as everyone else, then they will just get stronger like Harrison did and nobody will be equal then like they wanted. They need to realize that you don't have to look the same to be equal.

Vonnegut's opinion is much different than ours. He believes that to be equal everyone must be exactly the same. They must look the same, be as smart as each other, and nobody was stronger than anybody. If they were any bit different, then they had to wear a handicap.

His opinion was that to be equal everyone had to be the same. If they had handicaps because they were different then a buzzer went off so it would clear their thoughts so they couldn't take advantage of their brains because they were more intelligent than the others.

Since his goal was to make everyone equal, the people that needed handicaps that had the same smartness got the same handicaps. All the buzzers went off at the same time for the people with the same handicap so everybody could stay equal, even if you were a different intelligence level.
