ELEMENT INFORMATION

  • Atomic number: 48
  • Atomic weight: 112.411
  • Melting point: 609.93°F
  • State at room temperature: Solid
  • Element classification: Metal

WHAT CADMIUM IS

  • Soft metal found in the Earth's crust
  • Used in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries
  • Develops in most zinc ores as a by-product
  • Not a magnetic metal

DISCOVERY & WHAT TO KNOW

  • Discovered by Friedrich Strohmeyer in 1817
  • Potentially dangerous (toxic) and limited for this reason
  • Used on other materials to protect from corrosion
  • Conducts electricity and heat
  • No reaction to water. Many reactions with other acids.
