PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CAESAR THE SOLDIER

BY PJ CUFF

Caesar rose to be one of histories biggest giants, and it was hard to do that in his time because success in his field wasn't enough, so he had to do more. This is what he did.

When Caesar was a general, he wasn't just a general. He was a statesman, a politician, and a strategist

"And it's what he did with the tools he had that made him a great general."

Caesar was capable of invention to some degree, so he was able to make decisions on the military organization.

As a general, Caesar took Rome from half-developed and unformalized, to a fully fashioned model of the principate.

Caesar also had faults as a general. He was unprepared for some battles, and others he fought armies larger than his, knowing he would lose.

Caesar was wise about his army. He stored his grain, organized a transport-chain, and took steps to guarantee the smooth working if his comissariat.

This is evident in "De Bello Gallico". We read in class that Caesar made sure his army ran smoothly.

Caesar took over 4 legions when he entered his province, and by the time the Gallic wars were over, he had more than 10.

Caesar perfected the manipulation of the roman legion. He saw a unique opportunity to create a powerful army, and he took it.
