PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Various TV commercials promoting the benefits of calcium tablets
We were told to drink milk everyday as children
My Opinion
- Adequate calcium intakes are indispensable for a healthier life
- Calcium does not guarantee that people will not get fractures and that children will grow taller rapidly
"...taking calcium supplement is not just a waste of time, but it could be harmful.”
----from NBCNews
Flaws
- Oversimplification
- Did not specify which population group should or should not take the supplements
The studies included in the article are rather carefully conducted and analyzed
The article oversimplifies the conclusion of the studies, degrades their credibility, and spreads wrong information to the public.
There is “little evidence currently to suggest an association” between calcium intake and fractures
No significant correlations between calcium intake and participants’ weight or length for infants (0-6 months) and children (3-18 years old)
More studies needed to be conducted
I am still inclined to believe that an adequate amount of calcium intake, dietary or supplemental, is needed
