SUICIDE RESEARCH

  • Suicide is the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally

STATS

  • Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death for ages 12-18.
  • More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.
  • Each day in our nation, there are an average of over 3,470 attempts by young people grades 9-12. If these percentages are additionally applied to grades 7 & 8, the numbers would be higher.

REASONS FOR INCREASE IN SUICIDE

  • Social media
  • Families who have problems with drugs
  • Bullying

FACTS AND MYTHS ABOUT SUICIDE

  • Facts- 1. Two thirds of people who commit suicide suffer from a depressive illness
  • 2. Drug and alcohol abuse often play a role in suicide
  • 3. Treatment works, and people at risk should receive professional attention
  • Myths- 1. Asking someone about suicidal thoughts may trigger the act
  • 2. People who commit suicide didn't want to get help
  • 3. Nothing can stop a person determined to commit suicide

WARNING SIGNS

  • Withdrawal from friends and/or social activities
  • Experience or fear of humiliation or failure
  • Drastic changes in behavior
  • Loss of interest in hobbies, work, school, etc.
  • Loss of interest in personal appearance
  • Increased use of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Giving away prized possessions

HOW TO HELP

  • Talk openly about it with someone
  • Get them to a mental health worker
  • Listen to them

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

  • Ask for help
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol
  • Make your home a safe place

AFFECTS ON FAMILY AND FRIENDS

  • Extreme guilt for not preventing the suicide
  • Failure because a person they loved felt unloved and committed suicide
  • Confusion
