  • Used to show the ability (to perform)
  • Correct context: I can eat 14 buffalo wings!
  • Incorrect: Can I have those 14 wings?
  • Why is that incorrect?⬆️
  • Because you would be using CAN to ask permission, and that's what MAY is for

MAY

  • Used to signify asking permission
  • Correct: MAY I have those buffalo wings?
  • Incorrect: I may eat 14 buffalo wings!
  • The sentence above is both Correct AND Incorrect
  • Why? Because, if used in future tense, it is correct, if used as present, it is incorrect.
