dairy farming started in new England 5700 years ago. they used British Frisian. the us commonly refers to them as Holsteins. But before she could produce milk she would have to have a calf.

once she is breed she waits 270 days she has her calf she is ready to be milked. if her calf is a girl it will become a heifer then she is breed and is a cow then if she goes a little over a year with out having a calf she is furred to as a dry cow, a dry cow is a cow that dose not produce milk. if the calf is a boy it is a bull calf or the farmer can have him neuter and he will become a steer.
