CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD
Canada is north of the United States and Ottawa is the capital.Canada is very cold and usually gets 12-14+ feet of snow a year. While In America snow usually depends on how north you are. In Texas we almost never get snow, but in be north like Ohio they get several feet of snow.
LIGHTS ACROSS CANADA
on the first Thursday in Canada lights get lit up along the capital to all provincial and territorial capitals across the country. In the United States most people set up lights on and around their houses.
MIDNIGHT MASS
In Canada everyone goes to a church service called midnight mass right before their Christmas feast. In America we usually don't have a church service the night before, but rather just eat and have fun
REVEILLON
The entire extended family sits together at midnight mass while the mother, grandmother, and any other willing volunteers stay to finish last minute dishes and decorations. After the last hymn is over everyone rushes home for reveillon or "awakening."
For their Christmas feast they have an assortment of foods like cipaille, meat ball stew, and oyster soup. While in America we usually have a turkey or ham with stuffing.
BARLEY TOYS
Barley toys are tasty animal shaped candies, either plain or on sticks. They are made of sugar, glucose, color, and olive oil on a stove and then poured into the fun shaped molds.
CHICKEN BONES
In America we may have peppermint flavored candy canes, but in Canada they have chicken bones. A cinnamon flavored, pink, hard candy stick filled with chocolate
DECORATIONS
In Canada they have lights, decorated Christmas trees, and "créches" or nativity scenes. The United States is similar. We too have lights and decorated Christmas trees, but we also have inflatables that are in the the shape of iconic characters like Rudolph the red nosed reindeer or frosty the snowman
MASKED MUMMERS
people wear masks and costumes and visit houses, miming and making rude noises and actions. They ring bells and ask for candy and other treats. If the host guesses their identity correctly then they take off their disguises, but if the host guesses wrong then they join the rest of the mummers in their parade.
In the United States we say merry Christmas as does Canada, however another word for merry Christmas in Canada is "joyeux noel"
In both the United States and in Canada we have Santa clause. While gifts may vary they are usually pretty similar. In America we receive toys, clothes, and electronics as does Canada; however, with all that snow they also get sleds to have fun in the snow and go sledding with.
SANTA PARADE
While here in America most people watch the Macy's Christmas parade in Canada they have a Santa clause parade. The parade has about 24 floats, an array of marching bands, clowns, and more travel the parade route with Santa clause
BOXING DAY
Boxing Day is the day after Christmas and is much like our Black Friday. On Boxing Day most people have the day off from work and have the day to shop and get good deals. Boxing Day is also the day the international ice hockey federation world junior championships starts.
Canada is very diverse as is America and even though they both celebrate different traditions they are similar in other ways.
