Canadian Independence

  • Both British and French settlers colonized Canada
  • After the Seven Year's War, the British empire took up New France
  • To diffuse tension, they were able to follow French law and culture

French Quebec vs. British Ontario

  • French Quarters- Roman Catholic, gov. by council of local elites
  • British Ontario- Protestants, British law, governed by elected representatives

Unity

  • United against US expansion
  • War of 1812
  • Conflict between British and French- British allowed them to manage internal affairs

British North America Act of 1867

  • Fear of US expansion
  • Joined Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick
  • Domain of Canada

Canadian Government

  • Province- own seat of government, provincial legislature, lieutenant government represented British crown
  • Federal government- Government General who acted as British Representative, House of Commons
