WHEN AND WHERE DID CANALS FIRST EXSIST

  • The first Canal was made in Worsley to transport large amounts of coal to Manchester.
  • This Canal is called the Bridgewater Canal and was built in 1761 by James Brindley.

WHY WAS IT CREATED??

  • The reason why the Bridgewater Canal was created is because it was more efficient and less costly as horseback to transport coal.

BENEFITS OF CANALS

  • Could carry much more product than a horse or cart
  • Was a lot faster and more efficent.
  • Could travel further in a shorter amount of time.
  • Less costly than using horses for transport.

PROBLEMS

  • Canals were very successful and came very popular over Britain but as the century progressed roads and railways were improved and this made canals not used as much
  • Also they were very costly to make

LEGACY OF THE INVENTION 21ST CENTURY

  • Today we use Canals mainly for leisure time with peace and quiet.
  • A slow and beautiful source of transportation
