CANOEING

8000 YEARS AGO

  • Used by Carib Indians of the Caribbean to travel between island
  • Hollowed out and shaped from large tree trunks

OVER 5000 YEARS AGO

  • Canoes were developed by the North Americans thousand of years ago
  • "Kenu" meaning dugout
  • A frame of wooden ribs, covered by birch, elm or cedar, most commonly birchbark, it was lightweight and waterproof

LAST 200 YEARS

  • Most canoes were made of aluminium or wood
  • Bill Mason is credited with popularising canoeing in the 1950s.
  • People used canoes to transport furs and materials, and closer to modern age, for enjoyment and pleasure.

PRESENT AGE

  • All modern canoes are made of plastic or fibreglass composites, traditional ones remain wooden
  • Canoes are a form of sport, and to experience the wild.

TECH AFFECTING PARTICIPATION

  • Nowadays canoes are much more durable and lightweight
  • They have greatly increased the range that is accessible
  • Many accessories add to the safety factor when canoeing

EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT

  • The early ages, trees were cut down to make the canoes.
  • Canoes don't really impact the environment unless you crash in to plants, or litter.

CHANGE IN EQUIPMENT

  • Paddles have progressed from wooden to aluminium.
  • Helmets and PFDs have been implemented to improve safety
  • Waterproof bags replace the animal skin sacks used to hold items

OVERALL

  • Technology has greatly improved the safety rating
  • Advancements have made canoes themselves much more durable
  • Therefore technology has a positive influence on outdoor experiences.
