PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CARBON

THE UNIVERSAL COMPOUND

CARBON

  • Carbon is found in all living things.

CARBON

  • Carbon is unique because:
  • It has 4 valence electrons
  • Valence means outer
  • The valence electrons allow carbon to bond to other elements

CARBON

  • Carbon can bond with many other elements:
  • Hydrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Phosphorus
  • Sulfur and Nitrogen

CARBON

  • Carbon can also bond with other carbon atoms
  • This allows carbon to form chains that are almost unlimited
  • Carbon forms very strong covalent bonds

CARBON

  • Carbon is the backbone of
  • Carbon or Organic compounds
  • (They are the same thing)

CARBON

  • The four carbon compounds are:
  • Proteins
  • Lipids
  • Nucleic Acids
  • Carbohydrates
