CLASSIFICATION OF PROTEIN

  • First class protein usually comes from animals ( red meat,chicken,fish,eggs,milk etc)
  • Second class protein usually comes from plants (lentils,pasta,nut,brown bread)

AMINO ACIDS

  • There are two types of Amino acids Essential and Non-Essentials amino acids
  • Essential amino acids must be obtained from food
  • Non-essential amino acids are made by the body
  • First class or HBV (high biological value)protein contain most essential amino acids
  • Second class or LBV(low biological value)protein may not contain all essential amino acids

THE FUNCTIONS OF PROTEIN

  • Growth of the body
  • Repair of worn out and damaged cells(when you cut yourself)
  • Gives us heat and energy
  • Makes enzymes,hormones and antibodies

RDA(recommended daily allowance)

THE RDA FOR PROTEIN IS 1GRAM FOR EVERY 1 KG OF OUR BODY WEIGHT

CLASSIFICATION OF CARBOHYDRATES

  • Sugars:honey,fruit,ice-cream ,gluecose
  • Starches:bread,breakfast cereals,pasta,potatoe,root veg,beans,peas,lentils etc
  • Fibre rich foods:Brown bread,brown rice,fruit&veg etc

FUNCTIONS OF CARBOHYDRATES

  • Provides heat and energy
  • Fibre rich carbs fill you up
  • Fibre helps prevent and stop constipation and other bowl problems

TO INCREASE FIBRE

  • Eat more brown bread and brown rice instead of white
  • Eat more fresh fruit and veg
  • Eat high fibre breakfast cereals such as bran flakes

REFINED CARBS

  • White flour is an example of a refined cereal
  • Whole grain cereals are better for the body because they contain fibre
  • The fibre is not digested but It obsorbs water which helps move foods along the digestive system
  • Muscular contractions called peristalsis push the food along the intestine
  • When cereals are refined fibre is removed
