HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

  • This career has been a relevant profession since 1931.
  • This career was created to be the bridge between management and operations. It has developed into a career with both business and engineering aspects.
  • After the Great Depression, the divide between industry and business needed to be closed. Industrial engineers were needed to fix companies from both ends.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelors degree is needed.
  • You need to major in industrial engineering or business.
  • Almost every college offers this major in some way from WSU to UofM
  • Most will find a job right away as long as they have intern experience.
  • Basic engineering jobs or business/management jobs are good stepping stones.
  • You must be a critical thinker and organized to be successful in this career.

  • There is a projected 88,000 job growth.

JOB POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Daily duties include examining production scheduling and to maximize the efficiency of a company.
  • It is a crucial part to having a successful engineering company.
  • Usually 40 hour work weeks in an office or industrial plant setting.
  • Dress code is business casual.
  • Usually reports to a higher manager or CEO but often is a manager or CEO that workers in both engineering and business come to.

  • The average pay is $88,000 salary or about $40 an hour.
  • Benefits include Health and life insurance, sick days, and good vacation days.

JOB REFLECTION AND OUTLOOK

  • It could be challenging to make many decisions, but it is good because it is a very broad career.
  • The multitasking trend would affect a new worker.
  • In Michigan, the United States, and the entire world the market for this job is either steady or increasing by 5%
  • Luckily this job was not too badly influenced by the economic downturn. Many companies sought industrial engineers to make them run more efficiently.
