WHAT AN AUTHOR DOES

  • Literary writer create stories, plays, poems, and novels
  • Writers reread and correct their pieces many times
  • Writers write either fiction or nonfiction
  • Some write short stories or novels
  • While some write science fiction, biographies, or other types of non fiction

EDUCATION PATH

  • Helpful high school may include
  • Creative writing, foreign language, or journalism
  • Most writers have a minimum of a four year degree
  • You need to have basic writing skills and a vivid imagination
  • Writers may send their work to local newspapers or magazines

OUTLOOK

  • A factor that could effect the employment is if students are interested in the college courses
  • Job seekers will find good employment opportunities both in Wisconsin and on the national level
  • There are approximately 40 employed writers in Green Bay and almost 1,500 in the Chicago area
  • In Wisconsin the employment rate was supposed to go up 6% from 2010 to 2020
  • There are supposed to be about 790 annual openings in Wisconsin

SALARY

  • At entry level in Wisconsin you would get paid around $26,000 per year
  • At the national level you would get paid around $28,000 at entry level
  • At median level; Wisconsin: $44,000; National: $56,000
  • At experienced level; Wisconsin: $74,000; National: $118,000
  • With exceptional skills writers can double or even triple these salaries, and the self employed determine their own benefits

WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS JOB

  • I excel in language arts
  • I have a creative and imaginative mind
  • I am interested in taking several of the college courses needed for this occupation

HOURS AND CONDITIONS

  • Most writers set their ow hours
  • They could work nights, weekends, and work evenings to meet deadlines
  • Writers must have self discipline and the self confidence to continue writing
  • Writers must also learn to work by themselves for long periods of time

WORK LOCATIONS

  • Most writers work at home
  • Some who work for other publishers might work in company offices
  • Writers sometimes have to travel to meet with editors and publishers

PROS AND CONS

  • Writers enjoy seeing their work published and out on the market
  • They take pride in being known for their hard work
  • Writers also like meeting new people and writing about new topics
  • Writers say it's difficult to get their work published because there is a great deal of competition
  • Writers say it is hard to make enough money to live on and that writing is difficult work

MORE INFORMATION

  • If you are an experienced author or one who manages to write greet books
  • You can get paid tons of extra money that is not in your normal salary
  • You want to try to get employed by a large publishing company such as Scholastic
  • So that way you can make a living and get a regular weekly salary
  • That is why I want to be an author
