PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CARS AND NEWTON'S 3 LAWS

Newton's first law
An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an unbalanced force.

Cars
Car will stay moving unless you push on the breaks.

Speed is how fast an object is moving

The gas pedal controls the speed of the car

Inertia is the tendency of an object to keep doing what it is doing

When you are driving in a car and come to a hard stop, your body moves forward a little after you stop because of its inertia

Newton's second law is the law of acceleration.

Acceleration is a change in speed. The car accelerates when you press on the breaks or gas.

Newton's third law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

When you get in a car crash and you hit another car, that car moves in the direction you hit it because of action and reaction

  • Momentum is how hard it is to stop something

A big truck going at the same speed as a small car has more momentum because it has more mass

Impulse is the force multiplied by the contact time.

Cars are made to crumple upon impact to create an impulse to prevent injuries.
