Climate/Conflict/Setting

Climate- In this short story the climate is how Montresor seeks revenge over Fortunado because Fortunado shamed Montresor in past experiences.

Conflict- The conflict in this story is man vs. man and it is between two people named Montresor who is the protagonist and Fortunado who is the antagonist.

Setting- An underground catacomb, somewhere in Italy, during the carnival season at night.
“It was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season…” (Poe 2)

Literary Elements

Irony
Since the theme throughout the short story is revenge, it is ironic that Montresor treats Fortunado so nicely to then seal him in a brick wall. For example, Montresor acts as if he is excited to meet again with Fortunato, but he later says "I was so pleased to see him that I thought I should never have done wringing his hands". (Poe 62)

FORESHADOWING

The time, the last night of Mardi Gras, hints at the "end of the party" to come. Fortunato's costume shows his foolish mistakes as he is ultimately lured into his death. The torch lighting, and crumbling facades remind the reader that it is a dark and unvisited place. A place where no one will ever find Fortunato.

MOOD
Dark and Suspenseful

As you can read in the story, Poe incorporates a bunch of ways to show the reader that Montresor is seeking revenge on Fortunato, specifically death. Its suspenseful because you never know what is next, until you actually read the story.

Tone
The tone is sinister and horror.

In the story, Montresor talks to his “prey” with sinister and tone. The latin quote “Nemo me impune lacessit” (Poe 4) translates to “no one attacks me with impurity”, which resembles and creates a sense of revenge, since Montresor is trying to seek revenge.

PLOT
Montresor wants to seek revenge on Fortunato, so he tricks him into thinking that he has expensive and rare wine down in the cellars, but really the cellars contain of human remains. Montresor leads Fortunato to the cellars where the wine is supposedly hidden. Then Montresor gets him intoxicated.
When they finally get to the bottom of the cellar, Montresor chains Fortunato and closes the walls around him, burying him alive.
“The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne…” (Poe 1)
“I must not only punish, but punish with impunity” (Poe 1)

Character analysis- Fortunado
A flat and static character exclusively so as to his oblivious nature toward the fact that Montesor is seeking permanent revenge over him. From this, one can conclude that, A, Fortunato is a predictable, and B, unable to quickly adapt enhancing both the static and flatness of his character. A connoisseur in fine wine who, almost as ironic as his name meaning ‘fortunate’, suffers from an intense alcoholic addiction, insensitivity, pride and as a result is incredibly naive. Fortunato is portrayed as accident prone and again reassures ironic quality as a clueless wine aficionado who is too blind to recognize the danger that is directly in front of him.
DESCRIPTIVE WORDS ABOUT FORTUNATO- alchoholic, insensitive, naieve, prideful, ironic

Character Analysis- Montressor
Right off the bat, Montresor is seen as the typical, picture perfect serial killer. An intelligent and cunning man, heir of a wealthy family and overall an unreliable and untrustworthy narrator. His attitude reflects utter egotistical qualities and a cold blooded, sinful style. Not only is he a true killer, but the entire concept is delightfully murderous and completely necessary to his thought process. In some sense, Montresor could be dubbed as round due to his hard to figure out way of living, however, from the begining on he is set in his motive and does not budge. Montresor lives much longer but he too is flat. His character does not change or develop, and he never even seems to realize the futility of what he has done making him static. DESCRIPTIVE WORDS-killer, unreliable, sinful, vengeful, seeking malice

Character Analysis

Luchesi is not necessarily a real character, he is much more of a plot device. He aids in driving the action seen in the climax of the story. Essentially, Luchesi is Fortunato’s main rival in the wine industry, making him a pinnacle of loath. All in all, Luchesi is mainly portrayed by Montresor in order to confirm his assurance when Fortunato is doubtful by bringing him up to spark Fortunato’s interest in delving into the catacombs. Montresor plays to the weakness of Fortunato as his main device, Luchesi being a main variable. DESCRIPTIVE WORDS ABOUT LUCHESI- distractant, rival, nemesis.

EDGAR ALLEN POE BIO
With such a short life, Edgar Allan Poe became a great American storyteller. At such a young age, he was orphaned. Edgar Allan Poe lived with his foster parents until college. While he was in college, he owed a lot of gambling debt, and his foster parents refused to pay that debt. He soon left college. His middle name "Allan" is his foster parent's last name. The Allan's provided Poe with great education. He married Virginia Clemm, but she soon passed away from tuberculosis in 1847. Just three days before his death in 1849, he had a delirious condition. On this Baltimore street two years after his wife's death, is where and when he died. Both Edgar Poe and Virginia Clemm lived a very short life. But with the invention of the "detective story" genre, and all his great stories, Poe made the best he could out of his very short life.
