BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Originated in India around 1200 BC
  • Form of Social Hierarchy
  • Many theories on how it originated
  • Aryans conquered India in 500 BC dividing the people into classes
  • Five main classes based on profession and birth called the caste system

5 MAIN CLASSES

  • Brahmanas- scriptural education and teaching
  • Kshatriyas- public service, Administration, and military
  • Vaishyas- businessmen
  • Shudra- semi-skilled and unskilled workers
  • Harijans- untouchables or slaves

WHAT IT IS

  • Separation of society
  • You are born into your class
  • Very difficult to move up a class
  • The Untouchables cannot move up
  • Heads of families would arrange marriages with other members of their class
