ORIGIN AND PATENTS

• Originally created in 5th century B.C.
• The original invention involved cutting open the patients eye
• The lens in the eye would then be removed or destroyed
• The destroyed fragments would then be absorbed into the body

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

• This is very important because it involves the human body
• It is a SURGERY involving the eye(s)
• An artificial lens must be created
• This must be inserted into the eye after the original is removed

INNOVATIONS
In the past, cataracts was "fixed" by simply destroying the cataract. Now we have a surgery to remove the cataract and replace it with a plastic lens. This has also been improved because of the better equipment that has been developed.

GLOBAL IMPACT
Over the years, Cataracts surgery has greatly improved the vision of many people (and animals) all over the world.
