THE GREAT PESHTIGO FIRE

  • Worst recorded forest fire in North American history
  • Peshtigo is a native Indian word that means "snapping turtle" or "wild goose."
  • Peshtigo's official population in 1871 happened to be 1,700
  • 19 survivors attended a ceremony on the 80th anniversary in 1951 (oldest was 96)
