Catheters: A Brief History
Catheters have been around for centuries
Evidence proves they were used in 3,000 BC
Ancient Syrians used reeds to remove excess urine in the bladder
In later times, catheters were made of brass, copper, gold, lead, and silver
Silver is still used today due its antiseptic properties
The first rubber catheters were introduced in the 1700s
It was improved in the 1800s by Charles Goodyear
He used vulcanized rubber
Latex rubber catheters became popular in the 1900s
Today, catheters exist in a variety of materials such as PVC and silicone
Types of Catheters Include:
- Hydrophillic
- Pre-lubricated
- Closed system
- Pediatric
