PRESENTATION OUTLINE
SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING
LIFE AND DIGNITY OF THE HUMAN PERSON
The dignity of each person must be protected by everyone. Every person is precious and are more important than objects. The church tells us that human life is sacred and the dignity of each person is the moral vision of society.
God created men and women in his image.
Genesis 1:26-31
CALL TO FAMILY, COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATION
Every person is not only sacred but social. Marriage and family are social institutions that must be supported. We must seek for the common good and well-being of all especially the poor and vulnerable.
This is my commandment,
love one another as
I have loved you.
John 15: 12-17
RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Everyone has a fundamental right to life. Corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to one another, to our families, and to the larger community. Human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected.
When someone is reduced to poverty
we have an obligation to help.
Leviticus 25: 35
OPTIONS FOR THE POOR AND VUNERABLE
The needs of the poor and vulnerable are first. Those who are oppressed by poverty are the object of preferential love. We will all be judged by our response to the least among us.
You shall not oppress the poor or vulnerable. God will hear their cry.
Exodus 22: 20-26
DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS
The economy must serve the workers not the other way around. Dignity of work is to be protected and basic rights of workers must be respected. The rights of workers are fair wages, joining unions, private property, and economic initiative.
Do not withhold wages from your workers,
for their livelihood depends on them.
Deuteronomy 24:14-15
We are called to be one human family. Loving our neighbors has global dimensions. At the core of the virtue solidarity is the pursuit of justice and peace. To gain peace you need to work for justice.
God blessed Israel so that all nations would be blessed.
Genesis 12:1-3
We show our respect to the creator by our stewardship of creation. Caring for the earth is part of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet.
Humans are commanded to care for God's creation.
Genesis 2:15
