CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHINGS

BY: CHARLIE BARBER #1

RESPECT THE HUMAN PERSON

This means that it is extremely important to respect everyone because everyone is a person, it is their right to be respected.

Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live for ever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. (7/17/13)
- Pope Francis

PROMOTE THE FAMILY

To me, putting the family first means making sure you care about your family more than anybody else. This means being truly loving towards your family.

It means caring for one another in our families: husbands and wives first protect one another, and then, as parents, they care for their children, and children themselves, in time, protect their parents. (3/19/13)
- Pope Francis

PROTECT PROPERTY RIGHTS

To me, this means that we need to respect people's property and we need to respect the rights and laws that people have over their property.

Let us continue to work so that all families have a dwelling and so that all neighborhoods have adequate infrastructure (sewage, light, gas, asphalt and I go on: schools, hospitals, or first aid rooms, sports clubs and all the things that create bonds and unite; access to health care – I said – and to education and tenancy security). - Pope Francis

WORK FOR THE COMMON GOOD

This means that we need to all work together to make the world a better place. The common good is anything that helps all people. Some examples include social justice and the end of wars.

It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. (3/19/13)

OBSERVE SOLIDARITY

To me, observing solidarity means that we may be many people, but we are all one society and we need to work together to accomplish anything.

The word “solidarity” is a little worn and at times poorly understood, but it refers to something more than a few sporadic acts of generosity. It presumes the creation of a new mindset which thinks in terms of community and the priority of the life of all over the appropriation of goods by a few. (11/24/13, no. 188)

RESPECT WORK AND THE WORKER

This means that no matter what, we need to respect people and their jobs. No job is shameful and we shouldn't think that any jobs are.

Work is fundamental to the dignity of a person. Work, to use an image, "anoints" us with dignity, fills us with dignity, makes us similar to God, who has worked and still works, who always acts...(5/1/13)
-Pope Francis

PURSUE PEACE AND CARE FOR THE POOR

To me this means that we need to be kind and respectful to all people, especially the poor who are often ridiculed. We need to help and care for the poor.

You tell us that to love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus. (5/21/13)
- Pope Francis
