TYPES OF AIR POLLUTANTS

  • There are two main types of air pollutants : primary and secondary
  • Primary pollutants are directly into the atmosphere
  • Secondary pollutants are formed in the atmosphere by chemical reaction with primary pollutants
  • Ex of primary : household product, power plants, and motor vehicles
  • Ex of secondary : divided into fine (enter air by burning fuel and coal) and course ( cement plants, incineration, and wood burning ) part.

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION

  • Causes health problem in the respiratory system
  • Causes smog( mixture of smoke and fog produce by industrial burning )
  • Causes temperature inversion ( warm air traps cool air near the earth's surface )
  • Causes acid precipitation

REGULATING AIR POLLUTIONS

  • California's zero emission vehicle program( electric cars, also adpoted by NY and a few other states)
  • The clean air act of 1970 , strengthen in 1990 gives EPA authority to regulate vehicle and industrial pollutants
