CAUSES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

French and Indian War
(1755-1763)

The war fought between the colonies of British America and New France, both sides supported by military units from their parent countries and Indian allies.

Proclamation of 1763

To create limitations as to where the colonists could settle.

Sugar Act of 1764

The colonists were taxed
on sugar.

The Stamp Act of 1765

The American colonists were taxed on every piece of printed paper they used.

Townshend Acts of 1767

Acts that introduced the British parliament to imposing duties on glass, lead, paints, paper and tea that was imported.

The Boston Massacre(1770)

A street fight between a mob of citizen throwing objects and the British soldiers that led to the killing of colonists.

The Boston Tea Party (1773)

A protest in which demonstrators were disguised as American Indians and threw an entire shipment of tea into the sea.

The Intolerable Acts (1774)

The American Patriot's name for a series of laws passed after the Boston Tea Party.
