Northwest ordinance of 1787
In the north the land became free states. The tension was created from the north and south not agreeing on slavery. So with the north being free of slavery the north got more support.
Missouri compromise of 1820
The compromise was when the north and south were divid. Every state in north was a free state and in the south there was slavery. This officially divided the south and the north from each other which caused more tension.
Texas annexation of February 1845
To expand the land of Texas, sign a treaty with Britain to divide up Oregon. The state of Texas would have to be decided as a free state or slave state. Whatever one it chose to be would add on to either the south or north but not both. Then one would be supported by more.
Mexican American War of May 1845
Polk saw that the government of Mexico needed money and afford to buy land and they said. O they wouldn't cede.The Mexicans saw Polk sending a troop to the land south of nueces as an act of war. Polk asked congress for a declaration of war.
Wilmot Proviso of August 1846 when congress banned slavery from any territory that might become part of the United States. The north was afraid the south would gain to much power if slavery was allowed in territories, but then with this law pasted the South saw it as an attack from the North.
Free Soil Party is Founded in Summer of 1848 Whigs and democrats wanted to take a stronger stand to stop the spread of slavery. Without slavery in the territory in the north had more support then the South.
Fugitive Slave Law of September 1850
To see people as being fugitive slaves and then have their freedom taken away from them. Cities in the north kept trying to resist the fugitive Slave law, it convinced northern that slavery was evil well most of the south believed it to be okay.
The Compromise of 1850
Was for both against and for slavery. It was to end the crisis, and give people what they wanted. The North was outraged by what was going on in the south and what it was doing to fugitives.
Republican Party is Founded in 1854
Formed by politicians who opposed slavery. The South wasn't for the party due to the fact that it was against slavery, which created a feud.
The Kanas- Nebraska Act of 1854
Stephan Douglas decided to form to new territories the Kansas and Nebraska territories. The South was for the act, Kansas would become a slave state. The North was against the act.
Bleeding Kansas of 1855
Deciding wether k
Kansas should become a free state or not. With people coming from Missouri to vote that Kansas should be a free state would make the North stronger. The North would have more support from other states, the South would get less and be weaker.
Dred Scott Decision of 1857
The decision was that Scott could not be a free man due to the fact that he was a slave and had no rights and was not a citizen, he was property. With the decision made that stated that slavery was allowed in all territories, that was what southerns had wanted all along. Giving them more support than the North.
Election of 1860
Abraham Lincoln got voted in as president. He was against slavery so he was on the Norths side, Abraham was helping the North more than he was helping the South, which cause conflict.
South Carolina Secedes from the Union on December 20, 1860
South Carolina didn't like the rules on slavery, and wanted to leave the union. After South Carolina left the union so did many other states. Leaving the North weaker than the South.
