Mitosis

  • What is mitosis? Cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes.
  • Why do cells need to divide? The larger the cell becomes the less efficient it is.
  • How many chromosomes do humans have? 46

INTERPHASE

  • What is interphase? It is between the first and second divisions of mitosis.
  • Describe G1, G2 and S ? G1- cell growth (starts to grow) G2- cell continues to grow S- DNA replication
  • What does a cell look like during interphase? The chromosomes are not visible.

PROPHASE

  • What is prophase? First stage of cell division, chromosomes become visible as paired.
  • What happens to a cell during prophase? The chromosomes coil, become short and visible.
  • What does a cell look like during prophase? The nuclear envelope starts to break down.

METAPHASE

  • What is metaphase? Second stage of cell division between prophase and anaphase, during which the chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers.
  • What does a cell look like in metaphase? Cell splitting in half, a circle with a slice through the middle.
  • What happens to the spindles and chromosomes during metaphase? Line up on the metaphase plate and prepare to be separated.

ANAPHASE

  • What is anaphase? Chromosomes move away from one another to opposite poles of the spindle.
  • What happens during anaphase? Pair of chromosomes separate and begin moving to opposite ends of the cell.
  • What does a cell look like during anaphase? Chromosomes are split and the sister chromatids move to opposite poles of the cell.

TELOPHASE

  • What is telophase? Final phase of cell division, chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends or the cell.
  • What happens to a cell during telophase? Nuclear membrane begins to reform at both ends of the cell and spindle fibers disappear.
  • What does a cell look like during telophase? The membranes for the two new nuclei form, the spindles are broken down by the cell.
  • What is a cleavage furrow? Indentation of the cell's surface that begins the progression of cleavage.

CYTOKINESIS

  • What is cytokinesis? Bringing about the separation into two daughter cells.

ERRORS AND MISTAKES

  • What are some common "mistakes" or errors that can occur during mitosis? During pregnancy
