PRESENTATION OUTLINE

COMPARING A CELL TO OUR COUNTRY

THE CELL WALL IS LIKE THE BORDER

  • The cell wall is found ONLY in plant cells
  • It is composed of cellulose
  • Protects the cell from outside things
  • The border of our country protects us from dangerous outside items or persons, such as terrorists

THE CHLOROPLASTS ARE LIKE THE FOSSIL FUELS

  • Contains chlorophyll
  • Found ONLY in plant cells
  • Performs photosynthesis
  • It is the power source of the cell
  • In our country our most popular source of energy is fossil fuels

THE CELL MEMBRANE IS LIKE THE CUSTOMS

  • Boundary that surrounds all cells and ind. organelles
  • Separates one cell from another
  • Allows some substances and and keeps some out
  • U.S. Customs prevents the illegal entry of people and goods while facilitating legitimate travel and trade.

THE CYTOPLASM IS LIKE THE ROADS

  • Keeps living material in cell in constant motion
  • The host for the chemical processes of prokaryotes
  • In the U.S. the roads is what keeps things in constant motion, people are always using them

THE NUCLEUS IS LIKE THE PRESIDENT

  • The largest and most visible organelle
  • Contains all of the cells information in the form of DNA
  • Control center of the cell
  • The president controls our country as the nucleus controls the cell

THE ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM IS LIKE THE SUPREME COURT

  • Highly folded membrane system in eukaryotic cells
  • Site for protein and lipid synthesis
  • The Supreme Court is where decisions and things are put together as in the endoplasmic reticulum protein and lipids are put together

THE RIBOSOMES ARE LIKE THE CITIZENS OF THE U.S.

  • Made of 2 components (RNA, Protein)
  • Not bound by a membrane
  • Made in the nucleus
  • 2 kinds (free, attached)
  • Citizens are able to interpret messages as ribosome interpret messages from the nucleus

THE MITOCHONDRIA IS ALSO LIKE FOSSIL FUELS

  • It is the power house of the cell
  • Muscle cells have more mitochondria
  • In the U.S. we get a majority of our energy by burning fossil fuels

VACUOLES ARE LIKE FAMILIES HOMES

  • Membrane storage compartment
  • Used to store starch and water
  • In the U.S. items are most commonly stored in houses

THE LYSOSOMES ARE SIMILAR THE GARBAGE MAN

  • Digest enzymes
  • Contain substances that digest excess or worn out organelles and food particles
  • The garbage man disposes of any unwanted things and objects

THE GOLGI APPARATUS IS LIKE THE POST OFFICE

  • Flattened stack of membranes that modifies, sorts, and packages
  • The post office modifies, sorts, and packages things to ship around

THE NUCLEOLUS IS LIKE THE COWS OF AMERICA

  • Located within the nucleus
  • Primary function is the production of ribosomes
  • Cows produce milk which is probably inside of the president as the nucleolus is inside the nucleus
