PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Cells are the basic unit of all organisms
Cells can carry out all of the life processes
Cells can be compared to factories, businesses, or schools
Each cell part has a specific role in maintaining homeostasis
The 3 Main Parts of a Cell
- cell membrane
- nucleus
- cytoplasm
THE NUCLEUS
- The NUCLEUS contains the genetic material for a cell
- DNA and RNA are examples
- The nucleus contains the instructions for making proteins
Cytoplasm
- provides cushion and support for organelles
- allows for easy transport of materials
- a fluid environment for organelles
The ER - A Transportation Network
- "endoplasmic reticulum"
- transport system
- materials move from place to place
- proteins made in the cell move this way
Rough and Smooth ER
- rough ER - has ribosomes attached
- smooth ER - ribosomes not attached
- ribosomes - synthesize proteins
What is so important about ribosomes and making proteins?
Energy Release From Food
- mitochondria
- powerhouse of the cell
- where food is broken down
- energy is released
Other Important Organelles
- golgi apparatus - packaging proteins
- vacuoles - storing water, food, wastes
- lysosomes - digesting unwanted material
Plant cells also have
- cell wall - firm structure
- chloroplasts - photosynthesis
- large central vacuole
