PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Cell Membrane
All cells have membrane. Small thing like water molecules can pass through it. This is called selective permeability. Think of a window screen. Two Jobs 1. To protect and contain cell
2. Controls what goes in and out of the cell
Like a fence with security guards.
Cell Wall
Rigid supports that surrounds the cell membrane of the plant cell. Made largely of cellulose. Holds plants upright in place of a skeleton.
Like a brick wall that makes it strong.
Cytoplasm
Cyto means cell. Cytoplasm is a gel-like substance that organelles float in. Fills the inside of cell. A lot of cellular chemical reactions happen in the cytoplasm.
Like a factory.
Nucleus
Control center of a cell. It contains hereditary information for the whole organism. All activities are directed from the nucleus.
Like a control center of a prison.
Chloroplasts- plant cells
Contains chlorophyll and is where sunlight and carbon dioxide are converted into sugar and oxygen... Photosynthesis
Like a kitchen.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Network of passageways that go through the cell. It helps transport materials. Rough ER has ribosomes on it where some proteins are made. Smooth ER doesn't have ribosomes on it.
Like a main road.
Lysosomes
Small spheres containing digestive chemicals. They break down waste and disposal and recycling. Help dispose of the entire cell at the end of its life.
Like a jaw breaker.
Golgi Complex aka Bodies or Apparatus
Sorts materials that then get sent by the ER throughout the cell. Makes vesicles out of its own folds of membrane.
Like a post office.
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell. Combines sugar molecules with oxygen to provide energy for all your cells' needs. Cellular respiration.
ATP Adenosine triphosphate.
The battery that powers the toy.
Ribosomes
Small structures. Can be free or attached to ER. They synthesize (makes) protein.
Small factories.
Nuclear Membrane
The double layer membrane around the nucleus. It 'protects' the nucleus from cytoplasm.
Nucleolus
The compartment where ribosomes are made.
Pores
Selects and changes molecules into carbohydrates, proteins, etc. Outer ring of the nuclear membrane.
Chromatin
Packages DNA into a small volume of cells. Long strands tightly curled up.
