PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CELLS

BY: HOPE GIRARD

CELL WALL

  • The tough outer layer of the cell
  • Protects and supports the cell
  • Made of a strong material called cellulose
  • Water and Oxygen can easily pass through
  • Animal cells do not have a cell wall

CELL MEMBRANE

  • Second barrier of a plant cell
  • It controls what comes into the cell and what goes out
  • Everything the cell needs passes through the cell membrane
  • All excess materials go out through the cell membrane
  • Prevents harmful materials from getting into the cell

NUCLEUS

  • A large oval shaped structure
  • Directs all of the cell's activities
  • The "brain" of the cell

NUCLEAR ENVELOPE

  • The outer protective shell of the nucleus
  • Protects the Nucleus
  • Materials go in/out of the nucleus through the pores in the nuclear envelope

CHROMATIN

  • Thin strands floating in front of the nucleus
  • Contain genetic material
  • Give instructions to the nucleus on the cell's function

NUCLEOLUS

  • Small objects floating inside the nucleus
  • Where Ribosomes are produced

CYTOPLASM

  • The region between the Cell Membrane and the Nucleus
  • Filled with clear, thick, gel like fluid
  • The fluid is constantly moving
  • Many of the cells organelles are found here

MITOCHONDRIA

  • Rod shaped structures
  • Convert energy in food into energy the cell can use
  • Known as the "powerhouse" of the cell

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

  • Passage ways in the cytoplasm
  • The passage ways carry materials from on part of cell to another

RIBOSOMES

  • Grain like bodies
  • Ribosomes produce proteins

GOLGI BODIES

  • Receive newly formed materials packages and distributes them
  • Also releases materials outside the cell
  • Look like flattened sacs and tubes

CHLOROPLASTS

  • Large green structures floating in the cytoplasm
  • Animal cells do not have chloroplasts
  • Captures energy from sunlight and produces food for the cell
  • Makes leaves green

VACUOLES

  • Large sac in the cytoplasm
  • Stores food, waste, and other materials
  • Some animal cells do not have a vacuole

LYSOSOMES

  • Small round structures
  • Contains chemicals that breaks down certain materials in the cell
  • Thought of as the "cleanup crew"
