CELLULITIS

Cellulitis is a potentially fatal disease caused by a cut, burn, or insect bite becoming severely infected. It last about 5-14 days long. There are about 200,000 cases each year.

BODY SYSTEM AFFECTED

The body system affected is the skin and muscles. But in some cases, it can travel to your bones and blood systems, making it very deadly.

If left untreated, it can travel to your lymph nodes and bloodstream which causes a whole body infection called sepsis.

BODY SYSTEMS AFFECTED

  • Loss of movement in the area of infection
  • Swelling inside muscles
  • Can possibly spread to bloodstream and contaminate it.

Anybody can contract the disease such as infants, toddlers, kids, and adults.

SYMPTOMS

  • Redness of the skin
  • Warmness
  • Fever
  • Blisters
  • Puss
  • Loss of movement in area

Causes

Cellulitis starts when a cut or injury gets infected with two common bacterias.

DIAGNOSIS

Doctors often do culture wound swabs to test for the bacterias causing cellulitis and blood test are also common.

Sometimes, doctors conduct mobility test to rule in or out any traces of cellulitis in the bones.

TREAMENT

Cellulitis can be treated by antibiotics like penicillin or an IV antibiotic

Other oral antibiotics are dilotacillin, amoxicillin, and cehalexin are the most reasonable choices if you have mild cellulitis

PROGNOSIS

After treatment, cellulitis can usually cause a scar or marking s on the site of the laseration.

The infection usually take 1-2 weeks for the infection to ware off depending on the severity.

DISEASE PREVENTION

You can prevent this by cleaning the area of the laceration right after the accident occurred.
