A Crystal

  • is a solid structure with flat sides
  • can be formed by many different substances
  • one way: concentrated solution then heat = cool and crystal

Crystal in the World

  • some believe that crystals can improve your health
  • Does anyone know of an idea their family believes about a certain stone or crystal?
  • Ex. Petrified Wood- live a long life

  • How does it work?
  • Why does it separate the colours?
  • How can this be used in life?

How does it work?

  • the ink is different solutes
  • the water is the solvent
  • the solutes have different levels of solubility
  • the more soluble the solute, the further it will travel up the filter paper

Activity

  • Choose a colour and grab a table sheet
  • Grab a filter paper slip
  • Predict on the table what colours you think will make up the colour you chose.
  • Draw a line on bottom of the filter slip
  • Put the paper in water hanging over the edge out of the water
  • Record the colours that separate.

Why do you think there was a difference from your prediction and your results?

Problem: somebody put too much sugar in some warm water, you need to separate the sugar from the water!
