EARLY LIFE

  • Born by Yuma Arizona
  • March 31,1927
  • Moved to californa after family farm failed .
  • Dedicated his life to improving farm workers lives

NATIONAL FARM WORKERS ASSOCIATION

  • Worked as a community and labor organizer in the 50's
  • Founded National Farm Workers Association in 1962
  • Lead a strike against grape growers
  • United with the Agricultural Workers Association
  • 2 Unions were named the Untied Farm Workers in 1972

STRIKES

  • March 1966, Chavez led a strike of California Grape Pickers
  • Strike was supported by Robert Kennedy
  • Early 1970's UFW organized many strikes and boycotts
  • Salad Bowl Strike; Chavez would fast for 25 days
  • Largest labor strike in history

CALIFORNIA AGRICULTURAL LABOR RELATIONS ACT

  • Chavez supported Jerry Brown's bid to be governor of California
  • 1st law was passed that gave Farmworkers the right to union elections
  • Passed the Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975
  • Led to series of UFW election victories
