Who is Cesar Chavez

  • The most important Latino leader in the U.S history
  • Born in Yuma Arizona on March 31, 1929 
  • Was the second of five children 
  • Labor leader and civil right activist

Early Years

  • The Chavez family had a small farm and ran a country store
  • Chavez family lost both their farm and store in 1937
  • Cesar was 10 years old when the family packed up and headed for California.
  • In the 1940's family moved to Delano California 
  • 17 year-old Cesar Chavez enlisted in the Navy

As an adult

  • He returned to Delano and married his high school sweetheart Helen Favela
  • Cesar and Helen moved to San Jose, where their first child Fernando was born.
  • Children Fernando, Linda, Paul, Eloise, Sylvia and Anthony
  • Chavez rapidly developed as an organizer, rising to become the president of CSO

  • He wanted Farm owner to me fair to companies  
  • Growers that owned the farms to respect farm workers 
  • Providing them with fresh water to drink
  • Bathrooms in the fields, and fair pay for a day’s work
  • Cesar worked hard and sacrificed a lot for the farm workers

  • César did not believe in violence
  • Many people supported César because he believed in nonviolence
  •  Farmers deserved treatment, respect, dignity, justice, and fairness.
